Meriwether Lewis: August 18, 1774 – October 11, 1809
Did you think you'd seen the last of Lewis & Clark? Unfortunately, this is a depressing subject matter.
Whether or not it was suicide —and I don't really want to start a debate, here— Lewis met his incredibly tragic end on the Natchez Trace on the night of October 10, 1809. Around sunset, he arrived at Grinder's Inn. Sometime around sunrise the following morning, he was dead, having suffered from two gunshot wounds: one to the head and another to the abdomen.
The picture and the quote refer to the evening before his death— between bouts of erratic behaviour, he calmly smoked his pipe and gazed into the wilderness, and was reported to have kindly remarked this to the proprietress, Mrs. Grinder.
I could go into so, so much regarding Meriwether's death and the circumstances leading up to/surrounding it...but it suddenly got late, I'm tired and now rather sad, and, frankly, plenty of books have already been written about it. If you're interested in reading more (heck, about Lewis in general), I highly recommend this book.

I found the book, and it really looks like a good book to read. I might ask my parents to get it. XD (for a present or something)
