First of all, let me begin straight away by explaining WHY I chose the panel I drew. Believe it or not, this may very well be the most memorable panel in the entire series for myself and my brother-- all thanks to a tiny printing error in the album we grew up with. Now, I'm not sure if it's particular to our copy, or if the defect appears in other copies, but in this panel, where we see the Captain raging after his brush (pun unintended) with the clothes-brushing machine, there appears to be a couple of tiny red flecks that have been scattered randomly. By a quirk of fate, one of those tiny red flecks is placed RIGHT by Tintin's mouth, making it look almost as if he's smiling slightly...and thus, the entire tone of the panel --nigh, Tintin's attitude itself-- has forever been changed. For YEARS my brother and I have guffawed over this printing flaw. It may seem like a tiny thing, but I don't know...the little things stick. See my recreation of the defect here: [link]
Now, as for the actual story, Red Rackham is great fun. My biggest problem with it is that there isn't a whole lot of content, and it feels like a bit of a waste by the time you reach the end of the book. However, the journey/hunt itself is both exciting and entertaining, so I can't complain that much.
Most importantly, though, it is absolutely hilarious. Hergé has finally hit his stride with Captain Haddock, who is just the right balance of gruff, short-tempered, passionate, dedicated, and hopelessly accident-prone. The introduction of Cuthbert Calculus just about rounds out the core cast of Tintin protagonists, and he, like Haddock did for Tintin, provides a great counterpoint (and source of endless frustration) to Haddock. I can imagine that people may find the "little-hard-of-hearing-in-one-ear" jokes tiresome after a while, but me? I never get tired of it. Calculus is my favourite character after Captain Haddock, and the two of them deliver the best comedic moments for the rest of the series.
It's a bit funny. For a period leading up to my re-reading of this installment, I had considered Unicorn to be the superior half of this two-parter, and I justified my opinion in a number of ways --lack of a villain, very little happening, mostly just a series of antics-- but then I realized that those very same phrases could be used to describe one of my top three favourite Tintin adventures, The Castafiore Emerald.
I really do love this one (and not just because of the defective panel)! The dozens of Red Rackham's descendants, the iconic shark submarine, the swearing parrots, the diving scenes ("Yes, yes, we're pumping!"), even the drunk shark, the ENDING...yep. Love it.
It's not perfect, but the flaws I can overlook in the face of the sheer fun that is had!
Haha, Tintin is a real jerk in this panel....how would he like it if all his clothes were ruined by the machine? You think it's funny, Tintin? Huh, HUH? Sadistic bastard.
Captain Haddock's interesting rude names have always been a favorite of my dad and I. Especially because Bashy Bazook (however you spell it) sounds like a mispronunciation of "moron" or "stupid" in Turkish. Your daily fun fact.
*checks her copy for red flecks* I guess it's a printing flaw in your edition. I did notice that apparently the title for Fllight 714 has been changed. My older editions list that comic as 'Flight 714' and my new editions (which I bought a few months ago because I don't have all the comics) list 'Flight 714 To Sydney'. There is probably some logic behind the change of the title that is beyond me.
Incidentally I received a coupon in the mail a few days ago for ordering a special edition of Unicorn You also get a Tintin figurine. Which is made of tin. I facepalmed when I read it. But that edition shall be mine
And while cleaning out some old boxes containing stuff from my college days (damn, that makes it sound like a long time ago -_- It's only been 5 years) I found my old Explorers On The Moon bookmark. Fate is spamming me with Tintin (We get a lot of commercials for Peugeot cars with Tintin on tv and posters at stations for the Thalys train to Paris with Haddock)
